Hiking & Painting in Nature – Chicago
Posted on April 19, 2009 by Christine
Oh Boy! Look who I found eating seeds below my bird feeder…it’s a chipping sparrow! You know winter is behind when you see this little guy. Notice his chestnut colored crown and distinguishable eye stripe. One cool fact: according to my Birds of Illinoisby Stan Tekiela, these little guys migrate at night in flocks!
Welcome back my chipping sparrow!

I wonder if that’s one that I fed over the Winter here. Let’s pretend that it is. π
Nice Chris- I’ve had them here about three weeks. They seemed to have replaced the Juncos in my backyard.
Like Lana, I am wondering if that is one of mine! π
I ran across this “YouTube” video a couple of days ago and thought it was really cool. It supposedly shows radar returns of birds taking flight on the night of 4/15/09 reflecting migration activity.
Lana: OK! I’ll pretend, I’ll give him a happy message to take back to you when he migrates in the fall π
Tom: I love them! Their little heads are so cute.
Alan: Oh how neat! Thanks for the link! The idea of nocturnal migrations are so amazing!!! π
