Another sketch class! Where has the time gone? Wow, how these days are flying by…holy cow!! Slow down time….slow down so we can savor every beautiful moment in nature!

This last Saturday was another successful sketch class through the MeetUp site. We decided to meet at Herrick Lake in Wheaton, IL.

This is a traveling sketch group. We visit different locations throughout the Chicagoland area.

Do you think you need to be a good artist to join us? No! Not at all! First, it’s not about the final product. We DO NOT CRITIQUE our work. It’s all about getting out in nature and actually enjoying it! It’s about being with others who love nature and art as much as you do. It’s about discovering new mediums and art toys. It’s about sitting together and seeing that great blue heron fly right in front of us and getting excited together!!!
Second, there is NO such thing as bad artwork. So stop that negative thinking and get out there!!

Next, Do you think this is a girls only club? No again! (cough, cough, don’t be shy boys). Hahaha! Look at what you’re missing….

Isn’t it beautiful?!? This is Herrick Lake. Not too big of a place, but certainly striking.

We set up shop right along the edge of the water.

Nature is the stage and we are members of the audience…taking careful notes, of course! We love you, nature. ❤

Today was surprisingly cool. Cool and damp, but it did not stop us from appreciating what was before our eyes, filling our senses.

We came away with personal souvenirs…One moment in time captured in watercolor, trapped in our sketchbooks, bringing us happiness for years to come.

Here is a close up of my sketch. There were many people enjoying canoes (I wish I was one of them!!!) and I decided to do the quickest sketch I could of a family that passed by. Gotcha!

How are you enjoying the summer so far? Are you sketching it? You know, it will be gone before you know it! So, Let’s Paint Nature!!

Sketch Class Results Hammel Woods

My MeetUp group: Chicagoland Sketchbook Hikers, meets all over the place. That’s the goal, especially since the Chicago area (you might not realize) has a ton of preserved land which is a refuge, an oasis, shall we say for souls like ourselves that need to connect with nature.

Last Sunday we met at Hammel Woods in Shorewood, IL. A short distance from the parking lot, we reach a section of the DuPage River and set up camp.

Some were comfortable sitting…

Alanna likes to stand…

And some of us just like the good old ground!

Whichever way was comfortable was good enough for us and produced the most amazing pieces of art!!!

Even though this day was rather warm and super humid, it was worth it. And now we will remember it forever in our sketchbooks. ❤

Here is a close up. Notice everything is not detailed, just certain spots here and there. This is an important idea in sketching, quick, not complicated, and loose.

Go ahead, escape to your oasis and try this yourself!

Isle a la Cache Watercolor Sketch

7-4-13  journal entry:

The factory plant hums in the background. Intermittent fire crackers go off in the distance, but I can tune them all out. The warbler has my undivided attention. My ears follow in his melody. I scan the land, my eyes transfixed on green, and wet, and green…

I’m declaring independence, my independence from society. To be in this world but not of this world. And to tune into the still, small voice of my Father who guides me all the way.

How wonderful His works, His mercies new every morning.

Sitting beside rushing water, I throw out a prayer and watch it float away…
Father, let me know Your plan for me…let me not miss it!!

I don’t want to go through the motions of living with out it. What’s the point?

I throw out questions left and right and in return feeling answers. Not hearing answers, feeling answers.

I feel love all around me. Deep and knowing, not superficial and fleeting. I feel strong in my declaration of independence.

Time alone is my way of going to therapy. Not only is it a free session, but the ironic part is that I’m never really alone. I’m humble enough to know I need this. I don’t have all the answers. Look, many people seek happiness in relationships, in alcohol, in buying things, in drugs, and some aren’t even aware they are doing this!

The Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him. Lam 3:25
