hummingbird shenanigans – watercolor

There’s monkey business going on here.

I have one hummingbird feeder which I recently put up even though summer is almost over. I had noticed a hummingbird visiting my herb garden in the backyard, and thrilled, I decided to have a dedicated food source for my new little friend.

Unbeknownst to me, there are four hummingbirds, not one. As soon as I put up the feeder, I discovered the pecking order. One hummingbird is a bully. His name is Sway. Sway tirelessly drives other hummingbirds away except for Chirpy. As their names suggest, Chirtpy constantly chirps even when feeding, and Sway sways left and right whenever he rests on a branch or on top of the feeder.

The third hummingbird’s name is Charlie Brown because he always seems to get the short end of the stick. He’s meek and mild, very quiet, and can only get a sip when Sway and Chirpy are away (which is not a lot).

The fourth hummingbird I have not named yet as I need more time. I have only seen the fourth in the same area one time.

Sway started a routine of driving other hummingbirds away. At least two times he accidentally drove his enemy into the garage where they both became disoriented and could not escape. Both hummingbirds kept hitting the roof of the garage and could not figure out that they had to lower themselves to exit through the doors. One made it out and the other I had to help guide. The second was so tired and filled with cobwebs, that I feared for its life. It did make it outside but barely was able to fly up into a tree.

Hummingbirds are amazing creatures. They beat their wings so fast that they constantly need to eat to replenish their reserves.

Needless to say, I’m going to purchase more hummingbird feeders so that the others can partake too.

Enjoy this up-close view of one of the hummingbirds feeding at the feeder…

Enjoy summer while it is still here my friends.

God bless,
Christine
