This tiny treefrog hides under the shadow of a mini pumpkin. It’s cooler here. It’s darker here. You tend to go unnoticed and that’s exactly what it wants.
I like how it folded its arms and legs underneath and laid low to the ground. When I briefly looked beneath the pumpkin, I thought I was looking at a rock…I almost flicked it! I’m glad I didn’t. I suddenly realized that was no rock.

I finally made it to Kentucky. This is my front porch. I’m in the country, and it is such a different world from Chicago. The wildlife is abundant. Every night and every dawn I hear owls. Every single day! To say I’m excited to be here is a great understatement. I can’t believe it to be honest.
There is so much to do.
The dirt on the property is dead. It’s hard like concrete, it contains rocks, and there’s no life within. I couldn’t find a worm if my life depended on it. Planting in this soil will be impossible if I don’t amend it with compost and mulch. My first goal is to help the soil so that I can plant food and native plants organically. On a brighter note, I have a pond!

I’m excited to have a pond! Even if it’s just a hole in the clay. This pond does not seem healthy to me at the moment. There are fish in it from the previous owner but no plants living in or around the pond. The pond is missing a healthy ecosystem and the area seems to be going through a drought, like much of the country. If the pond had a healthy ecosystem, the fish can feed on the plants and would not need supplemental food.
I’m really new to all of this. Helpful pointers would be most appreciated! I’m starting from scratch and the task seems daunting. It will be hard work, but it will be most rewarding.
The title refers to one of my favorite scriptures:
He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.
Psalm 91:1
Stay there my friends and find rest, just like the treefrog.

Thank you, Gene! Sometimes the smallest still-life speaks gigantic words. 🙂
