This large shrub wanted to be painted as it stood so quietly in the frozen rain. I agreed and had the pleasure of doing so. It was quite striking with its purple-burgundy twigs and the flattest crown I’ve ever seen. It’s funny how different characteristics of each tree or shrub will call out to you if you listen.

Here is the actual shrub. The temperature at this time was dancing on the border of snow versus rain. The rain was pelting the window as if the droplets were frozen. It made the most wonderful sound. Later that night, it did snow.

And I stayed warm and snuggly under the blanket as I sketched this tiny 4″ x 6″ (10.16 x 15.24 cm) watercolor. It only took about 20 minutes. The sketch does not look exact but that’s okay, even preferred, for I do not want two photos but one photo and one artistic interpretation.
Let nature inspire you, even if it’s right outside your window.
Lovely! And you’re right– leave photo-realism to the photographers! 👍😊
