30 Minute Quick Watercolor Sketch Churchill Woods

20170624_worry

Just above the water, swallows chase each other under the bridge. A Baltimore Oriole makes a quick appearance, then disappears into a sea of green. The wind is strong, but the temperature is warm and a rush sounds in between the leaves.

I sit and make a quick sketch. Simple color and simple shapes. I let my mind float away on the next breeze.

I started a new MeetUp group called, Through Christ Who Strengthens. Not only do we visit multiple forest preserves to paint nature, but we discuss a topic of struggle in life and how to overcome them. Running to scripture and renewing our minds is a key strategy in overcoming life’s difficulties. When we are done with our watercolor sketches, we add a scripture verse pertaining to the struggle.

Our beautiful artwork.
Everyone chose a different scripture verse pertaining to worry. Now, the next time we worry, we can look at our sketches and read our verses. Someday the group will make some encouraging artwork for others too.

So, if you live in the Chicago area and would like to sketch with us and learn how to defeat life’s struggles with scripture, find us here.

East Branch DuPage River Watercolor Sketch

East Branch DuPage River
Churchill Woods
40°F  Calm

A mild temperature cultivates an ideal setting for wildlife. There seems to be no end this day, as I notice abundant wildlife everywhere. Sitting next to the quiet river, a gaggle of geese tranquilly bobs up and down. Suddenly, half of them take flight for reasons unknown. The heavy beats of their wings splashes the top of the water, creating excitement like electricity in the once quiet air. I watch in slow motion as they accelerate in height as well as speed.

Looking up, a kettle of hawks glide on the thermals spiraling downward. Some screech as they glide making this human envious of their freedom.

Deer litter the field along the trail. They are hesitant while staring at me, feeling me out. They are quiet, gentle giants, giving me the benefit of the doubt. If I take a step forward, they take a step further, then stare. Step. Stare. Step. Stare. We perform this dance in nature between human and beast. Another dance takes place above as a male cardinal chases a female from twig to twig. The flash of red catches my eye, red against the brown of winter.

Autumn’s Approach – Kankakee River Watercolor Sketch

Autumn. My favorite season of all seasons. We are now experiencing Summer’s whimper and watching it lose its grip. I welcome the cool nights, the dance of the autumn leaf as it spins to the ground, and that unbelievably delicious smell that no other season can offer. Why does Autumn have to be so fleeting?!?

To welcome this threshold, a road trip was in order to Kankakee State Park. What an amazing day. The tips of the trees are just beginning to turn along the Kankakee River.

The sun was warm and nourishing my spirit as I was an admirer of nature replicating it in my sketchbook. How blessed I am to appreciate this. I do not take it for granted.
